What’s my angle on Body Language?
It’s not solely about figuring out when someone’s lying to you, knowing how to pull off your own lie or mastering the art of dating; it’s not about manipulating or seeking control over others. Our movement is about understanding how people communicate; knowing the messages that you’re sending out — both verbally and nonverbally — and being able to read the messages that the other person is sending in. It’s about understanding hidden meanings and knowing how to present yourself so that you can effectively communicate with others. However, we certainly can’t deny the fun of knowing when someone’s bluffing at a hand of poker, watching politicians in action or wooing a potential mate and so Body Language TV promises to be a mix of all of these.
What exactly IS Body Language? Multiple research studies have shown that communicating a thought to another person involves much more than the words we choose to use. (How many times have you had the meaning of a written email misinterpreted by someone?) In fact, research has shown that more than 80% of the way we communicate our thoughts comes from how we use our body – including how our eyes move, our use of hand gestures, how we dress, our posture and how we set up our environment.
Don Khoury, the host of Body Language TV, has always been fascinated by how people communicate with one another. As a child growing up in a large immigrant family he spent countless hours around the kitchen table playing cards with his uncles and cousins. “What I saw was that the same uncles were winning hand after hand of cards. I knew it wasn’t luck alone that was helping them win. I wanted to win too, so I started watching them closely. What I learned was that my uncles were studying people’s body movements and making predictions based on those movements. ”
Don began his professional career as a top-performing Sales Professional with Xerox. “My success in sales didn’t come solely from being book smart. Although I’ve read hundreds of books about Sales, Marketing, Psychology and Nonverbal Communication and have successfully used the techniques presented in these texts, the biggest factor for me in my sales career was being able to “read people”. You have to have that “certain something” that lets you know what clients are thinking before they even know it themselves. ” Don believes that “certain something” is an understanding of Body Language. Often, we instinctively read people’s body language and intuitively feel when something is right or wrong, but discount our judgments because we can’t quite put our finger on what it is we’re observing.
With an entrepreneurial spirit and a wealth of knowledge, Don has taken his passion for helping people communicate more clearly and turned it into a successful international consulting practice. Don says, “In this day and age where people are in front of a computer more than they are in front of each other, we’re losing the art of understanding how to communicate through Body Language. Those who know it will be more profitable in both their business and personal lives. Those who don’t will continue to feel lost. ”
So, if we’re spending too much time in front of our computers and not enough time face-to-face, then why Body Language TV? Well, it’s simple. We’re hoping to build a community to reach as many people as possible. We invite you to join the community, comment on videos, share what you observe and share your newfound knowledge with those you see on a daily basis. We hope you’ll learn, laugh and grow along with us.
Our purpose here is to engage in a community discussion for two reasons. The first is to create an awareness of how important body language is to all of our communications and second to create an exchange of ideas on how to best use this awareness so we can enjoy more fruitful outcomes in all of our relationships. We invite you to pull up a chair at our proverbial kitchen table and join in the “people watching”! We just might learn a thing or two together along the way.
